Genetic Basis of Mastitis Resistance in Cattle
نویسنده
چکیده
Mastitis is one of the most important diseases affecting production in dairy cattle. Control strategies against mastitis such as antibiotic therapy, vaccination, improvement of farm and feeding management have met with little success. Genetic variability of mastitis resistance is well established by several independent studies in different breeds of dairy cattle. Usage of somatic cell count or clinical mastitis as an indicator for selection, to produce genetically mastitis resistant animal have led to limited achievement. This is due to polygenic control of mastitis where many genes are involved. Polygenic nature of this trait projected the need for exploring candidate genes responsible for mastitis resistance. The wisdom about genetic basis of mastitis resistant would aid us in producing future herd with genetically mastitis resistant animals.

Integrating Sequence-based GWAS and RNA-Seq Provides Novel Insights into the Genetic Basis of Mastitis and Milk Production in Dairy Cattle
Connecting genome-wide association study (GWAS) to biological mechanisms underlying complex traits is a major challenge. Mastitis resistance and milk production are complex traits of economic importance in the dairy sector and are associated with intra-mammary infection (IMI). Here, we integrated IMI-relevant RNA-Seq data from Holstein cattle and sequence-based GWAS data from three dairy cattle...
متن کاملAssociation of toll-like receptors 2 and 6 polymorphism with clinical mastitis and production traits in Holstein cattle
Mastitis is a costly disease of dairy cattle as it causes a loss in milk yield and milk quality in affected cows. Toll-like receptor (TLR) genes play a role in the host response to a variety of organisms including those inducing mastitis. In the present study, we investigated the polymorphism of TLR2, 4, 6 and 9 genes in Holstein cattle and ...
متن کاملGenetics of resistance to mastitis in dairy cattle.
Genetic variability of mastitis resistance is well established in dairy cattle. Many studies focused on polygenic variation of the trait, by estimating heritabilities and genetic correlation among phenotypic traits related to mastitis such as somatic cell counts and clinical cases. The role of Major Histocompatibility Complex in the susceptibility or resistance to intrammamary infection is also...
متن کاملGenetics of udder health in dairy ruminants
Udder health troubles in dairy ruminants mainly include intra mammary infections, or mastitis, caused by a pathogen that enter the gland through the teat canal and develop in the gland cistern. Mastitis is a multifactorial disease; it’s origin, severity and outcome are highly variable and depend on environment, a wide variety of pathogens (mostly bacteria) and host. In dairy cattle, mastitis is...

The literature concerning selection for mastitis resistance in dairy cattle is reviewed and the reasons for including mastitis resistance in dairy cattle breeding programs are described. The current situation in Denmark, Finland, Norway and Sweden is described with emphasis on the data recording schemes and the choice of models used for breeding value estimation. The use of clinical mastitis da...
